July 04, 2010 - Back to list

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SALT LAKE CITY

In response to dire need to rebuild and strengthen schools in hurricane ravaged Haiti, a newly formed non-profit organization called Zion's Children of Haiti is seeking the public's help to raise money to help provide elementary schooling to children affected by the hurricane.

"Fewer than 30 percent of children in Haiti reach the 6th grade" said Jeffrey Bigelow, MD, MPH, who helped form Zion's Children of Haiti based in Salt Lake City, Utah. "There is a vital need to help these Haitian children through skill training, language training and providing orphan care.  We are in need of the public's help to accomplish our goal of providing a better education and hope to these children."

Ninety percent of the schools in Haiti are non-public and money is desperately need to help provide the tools needed for teachers to help educate children. A major fund raising effort called the Haiti's Kids 5K (HK5K) & Fun Run will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. To register or donate, visit www.zionschildrenhaiti.org.

Volunteers from Zion's Children of Haiti are scheduled to visit Gonaives, Haiti in August 2010, where an additional donation will be made to school children. To donate to Zion's Children of Haiti, visit www.zionschildrenhaiti.org.
